No words can describe the beauty and eternity of Okinawan pottery. With every move and thoughts put into, local artists turn the island’s earth into a piece of gem. No individualism goes into making it. Their magic hands know how to produce Okinawan colors, patterns, and shapes – elements of what makes one’s life more fulfilling than a day before. Since Okinawa’s reversion from the US occupation to Japan in 1972, Yomitan, located on mainland Okinawa, has undergone rebirth with culture as a main means of regaining prosperity and a sense of self-esteem. What used to be a site for disposing unexploded shells became the Yomitan Potters’ Village, a symbol of Okinawan traditional culture. In 1991, Kitagama, a local pottery collective featuring four workshops including that of Master Yoneshi Matsuda, found its birth in the Yomitan Potters’ Village following five years of diligent preparation. It is this Kitagama, which means North Kiln in Japanese, where Okinawa’s traditional pottery styles have been practiced vigorously and where expertise transcended from a master to a student is producing what is to become tradition one day.

個人はいらない。 ひたすら手を動かせば、沖縄の色、模様、形になる。暮らし を潤すものになる。
1972年の沖縄本土復帰後、文化を旗印に再生した沖縄本島・ 読谷村。
かつての不発弾処理場は、沖縄文化を象徴する〝や ちむんの里〟として生まれ変わった。
そして‘91 年、松田米司ら四人の若者が夢を託した北窯が、 5年の歳月をかけて誕生。
古き良き沖縄の姿をとどめるその 窯は、健やかに力強く「今」が鼓動している。今が伝統となる。
